Ekiti Para Karate Claim Medals as Para-Athletics Chairman Visits Contingent
Ekiti State’s campaign at the 2026 National Para Games in Abuja gained early momentum with medal success in para karate, as the Chairman of the Para-Athletics Association, Akin Rotimi, paid a courtesy visit to the state’s contingent.
Taiwo Olasunkanmi delivered a gold medal performance for Ekiti in para karate, while Araomo Oladapo Stephen added a silver, marking one of the state’s first podium finishes at the ongoing Games.
Rotimi, who represents Oye/Ikole Federal Constituency I, met with athletes and officials at their camp, where he commended the team’s effort and approach to the competition.
He also referenced the support provided by Governor Biodun Abayomi Oyebanji, noting the administration’s role in strengthening sports development and backing athletes with disabilities.
Rotimi said his engagement with the team would extend beyond the visit, disclosing plans to support athletes through his non-governmental initiatives. He encouraged the contingent to remain focused on their events and aim for podium finishes as the Games progress.
Responding on behalf of the team, Mr. Ogundele acknowledged the visit and said the athletes had received the required logistical backing from the state government ahead of the competition.
Team captain Segun Durotawo described the visit as timely, adding that it would serve as additional motivation for the athletes.
Also present during the interaction were officials of the state sports commission and head coach Ojo Peter.
The National Para Games continues in Abuja, with athletes from across the country competing in various events, as Ekiti looks to add to its medal tally.
