Agbeyewa Cup Kicks Off As Organizers Unveil Key Dates
ADO-EKITI, Nigeria — The third edition of the Agbeyewa Secondary School Football Tournament has officially kicked off across Ekiti State, featuring a record 150 secondary schools vying for supremacy and the ₦1 million champions’ prize.
The grassroots competition, which began Monday, Oct. 6, 2025, is an initiative aimed at promoting youth development and talent discovery through football across all 16 local government areas of the state.
According to Alhaji Dauda Lawal, Director of Community Engagement, the Agbeyewa Cup is more than a football tournament. “This platform is designed to build character, resilience, and unity among young people while discovering and nurturing hidden talents,” he said.
The 2025 edition will progress to the Round of 16 on Oct. 16, followed by quarterfinals on Oct. 21 and semifinals on Oct. 23. The grand finale is set for Oct. 28, where a new champion will emerge.
Aside from the ₦1 million grand prize, the first runners-up will receive ₦750,000, while the second runners-up will take home ₦500,000. Local government winners and the tournament’s Most Valuable Player will also earn financial rewards.
Last year’s edition crowned Omuo-Ore High School as champions, earning them ₦1 million, a trophy, and gold medals. Government College, Ado-Ekiti, finished second to claim ₦500,000 and silver medals, while Ifaki Grammar School took third place with ₦250,000 and bronze medals.
Now in its third year, the Agbeyewa Cup continues to cement its place as Ekiti’s premier school football championship—uniting communities, shaping character, and spotlighting the next generation of stars.
