Ekiti Government Sets Ambitious Targets for State-Owned Football Clubs Ahead of 2026/27 Season
The Ekiti State Government has outlined its vision for Ekiti United FC and Ekiti Queens FC ahead of the 2026/2027 football season, setting ambitious targets for both state-owned clubs while reaffirming its commitment to player welfare and sports infrastructure development.
According to the government, Ekiti United FC has been tasked with securing promotion to the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) at the end of the coming season, while Ekiti Queens FC is expected to qualify for and compete in continental club competitions.
The state government said the targets reflect its determination to reposition football in Ekiti and establish the state’s clubs among the country’s leading football sides.
To support the clubs in achieving these objectives, the government said it will continue to prioritize the welfare, health and overall well-being of players and technical officials, describing their welfare as a non-negotiable aspect of its sports development agenda.
As part of its investment in sports infrastructure, the government also announced the completion of the reconstruction of the Oluyemi Kayode Stadium, including the installation of a state-of-the-art astroturf pitch and the general upgrade of the facility.
The upgraded stadium is expected to provide players, officials and supporters with a modern, safe and comfortable environment while enhancing football development and competition in the state.
Ekiti Queens concluded the 2025/2026 season in fourth place on the Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL) Premiership Group A table with 22 points and a goal difference of -2, while Ekiti United finished third in the Nigeria National League (NNL) Conference B standings with 30 points and a goal difference of +4.
The vision forms part of the sports development agenda of Governor Biodun Abayomi Oyebanji’s administration as preparations gather pace for the 2026/2027 football season.
