Vandi Targets NPFL Promotion, Insists No Automatic Shirts at Ekiti United
Head Coach of Ekiti United FC, Jacob Vandi, has declared that no player is guaranteed a place in his team as preparations intensify for the 2026/2027 Nigeria National League (NNL) season.
Addressing retained players and newly invited prospects during the club’s training session at the Oluyemi Kayode Stadium, Ado-Ekiti, Vandi stressed that selection into the squad would be based strictly on merit.
The experienced tactician told the players that hard work, discipline, commitment and consistent performance would be the only criteria for earning a place in the team, insisting that there would be no preferential treatment for any player.
According to Vandi, only players who demonstrate quality, determination and a willingness to fight for the club’s badge will be considered as the team prepares for the new campaign.
The coach also reminded the squad of the target set by the Ekiti State Government for the club to secure promotion to the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL).
He disclosed that the mandate was conveyed through the Technical Adviser to the Governor on Sports Development, Dr. Mrs. Olusola Osetoba, adding that everyone connected with the club must remain focused on achieving that objective.
Vandi said he is prepared to work with players who are fully committed to the club’s vision, regardless of the challenges that may arise during the season.
“There are no special or untouchable players in this team. Everybody will be treated equally, and selection will be based strictly on merit,” he said.
Expressing confidence in the team’s prospects, the Ekiti United coach said the club has what it takes to secure promotion with the continued support of the Ekiti State Government, the technical crew, the players and the club’s supporters.
“Nobody has an automatic shirt in this team. Every player must fight for his place and earn it on merit. The time is now, and together we can achieve promotion,” Vandi stated.
Ekiti United finished third in the 2025/2026 Nigeria National League (NNL) Conference B with 30 points and a goal difference of +4, narrowly missing out on the promotion playoffs. The club will be aiming to go a step further in the 2026/2027 season as it pursues a return to the Nigeria Premier Football League.
