SOUTHWEST CALL UP: EKITI U17 CRICKETERS INVITED TO SOUTHWEST TEAM DESPITE SEMIFINAL LOSS
Three outstanding Ekiti State Under-17 female cricket players have earned selection to the South West regional team, despite their team’s narrow semifinal loss at the PWC Under-17 Championship. Ojo Gift, Popoola Opeyemi, and Olagunju Oluwasekemi impressed selectors with their performances and will now represent the region at the National Under-17 Tournament in Abuja later this month.
Ekiti State’s semifinal match against Ogun State was a tightly contested battle, ending in a heartbreaking one-run defeat, with Ekiti posting 98 runs in 19.4 overs. Despite the setback, the selection of three players highlights the team’s potential and the state’s growing reputation in Nigerian cricket.
The PWC Under-17 Championship showcased the best young cricket talent in the region, and Ekiti’s strong run to the semifinals was a major highlight. Their performance demonstrated both skill and resilience, reinforcing the state’s emergence as a cricket powerhouse.
