Ekiti Set for Kiddies Summer Sports 2026 as Government Targets Grassroots Talent Development
The Ekiti State Government has announced plans to organise the Kiddies Summer Sports 2026, a two-day grassroots sports festival designed to engage children under the age of 15 in competitive and recreational activities.
Scheduled to hold on August 17 and 18, the programme will run daily from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. under the supervision of the Office of the Technical Advisor on Sports Development.
The initiative, driven by Governor Biodun Oyebanji through the Technical Advisor on Sports Development, Dr Olusola Osetoba, is aimed at identifying young talents, encouraging active lifestyles, and strengthening grassroots sports development across the state. The event is receiving support from Abiodun Falegan, while organisers have also announced that a mascot will feature throughout the festival to entertain and engage participating children.
Children participating in the event will compete in athletics, football, egg race, fill-the-bottle race, sack race, tug of war and other fun-filled activities.
The Speaker of Ekiti State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Adeoye Aribasoye is expected as the Special Guest of Honour, while young motivational speaker Rhoda Ololade Ajayi will deliver spoken word and an inspirational session for participants.
Speaking ahead of the event, Dr. Osetoba described the initiative as a strategic investment in the future of sports in Ekiti, noting that exposing children to organised sporting activities at an early age would help nurture talent, build discipline and encourage healthy living. She also called on parents and guardians to register their children and wards for the programme.
Organisers added that outstanding participants will receive exciting gift items, with the festival expected to provide a memorable blend of competition, learning and recreation while promoting fitness, friendship and sportsmanship among young athletes.
