IKOGOSI MARATHON: Over 5,000 Runners to Light Up Ekiti
The countdown to the 2nd Ikogosi Marathon Race has taken a new turn as Governor Biodun Oyebanji reaffirmed his government’s commitment to growing sports and tourism in Ekiti State. The Governor, represented by his Technical Advisor on Sports Development, Dr. Olusola Osetoba, made the declaration in Ado-Ekiti during a press briefing on Monday.
This year’s edition, billed for November 8, 2025, will see over 5,000 athletes take on the 27.5km challenge, beginning from Ilawe and finishing at the world-renowned Ikogosi Warm Springs Resort.
Osetoba stressed that the marathon is more than just a race, describing it as a rallying point for fitness, investment, and state pride. He urged Ekiti people to open their doors to visiting athletes and tourists, noting that the event would serve as a powerful display of Ekiti’s unity, resilience, and cultural hospitality.
The race initiator, Mr. Femi Abegunde, lauded the Governor’s unflinching support for youth and sports development, noting that the state’s leadership is steadily positioning Ekiti as a stronghold for sports tourism in Nigeria. Abegunde revealed that registration is free for all Ekiti indigenes until November 1 via www.ikogosimarathon.com.
Highlighting the stakes, he announced a ₦2 million top prize for elite winner, with the second and third positions earning ₦1.5 million and ₦1 million respectively. Indigenous athletes will also share a prize pool ranging from ₦1.5 million to ₦50,000 across six categories.
Also speaking, the Director General of the Bureau of Tourism Development, Ambassador Wale Ojo-Lanre, described the race as a cornerstone project that connects sports with business opportunities for hoteliers, transporters, artisans, and other players in the tourism chain.
With less than two months to go, the Ikogosi Marathon is already shaping up as not just a showcase of endurance but a statement of Ekiti’s rising sports culture.
