Ekiti’s Damilola Earns Nigeria U-19 Call-Up for ICC World Cup Qualifiers

Ekiti State cricketer, Oni Oluwadamilola, has been named in Nigeria’s U-19 women’s squad for the ICC World Cup Africa Division 1 Qualifiers, following her impressive rise through the national youth cricket pathway.

The call-up, confirmed in a letter from the Nigeria Cricket Federation and announced in a statement by the Ekiti State Cricket Association (ESCA), reflects her consistent performances at youth level competitions and her growing reputation within Nigeria’s cricket structure.

Damilola first came into prominence at the National Youth Games in Asaba (2025), where her performances earned her recognition and an invitation into Nigeria’s youth setup. She further strengthened her profile at the National U-17 Girls Championship, where she was named Best Fielder of the Tournament.

Reacting to her selection, the Technical Advisor on Sports Development, Dr. Olusola Osetoba, congratulated the athlete and commended Governor Biodun Oyebanji for sustained commitment to sports development in Ekiti State. She noted that Damilola’s achievement reflects the impact of ongoing investments in grassroots sports and athlete development.

She also encouraged young athletes in the state to take advantage of existing sports development structures to build their careers and secure brighter futures through sports.

Damilola who was invited alongside 16 others across the country expressed excitement over her national team selection and reaffirmed her commitment to continuous improvement. She said she is determined to make the most of the opportunity and make her state, coaches, and supporters proud. She also appreciated the Ekiti State Government for providing an enabling environment that has supported her development and growth in the sport.

The development has been widely viewed as a positive reflection of the steady growth of sports in Ekiti State, driven by structured grassroots development and increased support for athletes.

Damilola is expected to represent Nigeria at the ICC U-19 Women’s T20 World Cup Africa Division 1 Qualifiers.
