Ekiti State Sports Development Office Introduces Rugby To The State As Rugby Federation Gives Support
The Ekiti State Sports Development Office has added rugby to the state’s list of officially recognized sports, with strong backing from the Nigeria Rugby Football Federation (NRFF).
Dr. Olusola Osetoba, Technical Advisor on Sports Development to the Governor, announced the addition while receiving Coach Salami Latifat, who recently completed an NRFF-certified coaching program and will oversee rugby training for aspiring athletes in the state.
As part of its support, the NRFF donated a full set of rugby training equipment — including balls, cones, inflators, whistles, and bibs — to help launch the sport at the grassroots level.
Dr. Osetoba said the initiative reflects Ekiti’s renewed commitment to expanding youth access to diverse sporting disciplines which is in line with the vision of Governor Oyebanji’s administration. “We are determined to give our young athletes broader opportunities by introducing new and globally recognized sports that can open professional pathways,” she stated.
The collaboration with the NRFF marks a new chapter in Ekiti’s sporting evolution, signaling the state’s readiness to embrace emerging sports and nurture talents capable of competing on national and international stages.
