Ekiti Queens FC Edge Naija Ratels FC in NWFL Matchday 5

Ado-Ekiti, Nigeria — Ekiti Queens FC claimed a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Naija Ratels FC in their Matchday 5 Nigeria Women’s Football League (NWFL) fixture played at the MKO Abeokuta Stadium on January 7, 2025.

Although designated as the home side, Ekiti Queens FC were forced to play the encounter away from their traditional base, the Oluyemi Kayode Stadium in Ado-Ekiti, following a three-match ban imposed after crowd disturbances in their previous home game against Edo Queens FC.

The decisive moment of the contest came in the 73rd minute when forward Ismail Zainab struck the only goal of the match, capitalizing on sustained second-half pressure to secure maximum points for the Ekiti-based club.

Both teams tested each other in the opening exchanges, but Ekiti Queens’ defensive organization restricted Naija Ratels to long-range efforts and half chances. The hosts grew more assertive after the interval, dictating play and eventually breaking the deadlock through Zainab’s composed finish.

Speaking after the match, Ekiti Queens FC head coach, Jacob Vandi, applauded his players’ attitude and tactical discipline while emphasizing the need for continuous improvement.

“The players showed character and executed our plans well despite the circumstances,” Vandi said. “We will go back to the drawing board because consistency is crucial. Our goal is to keep winning and remain competitive throughout the season.”

Also reacting, Dr. Olusola Osetoba, Technical Advisor on Sports Development to the Governor of Ekiti State, praised the team’s performance and acknowledged institutional backing.

“This victory reflects the commitment of the players and technical crew,” Osetoba said. “I commend Governor Biodun Oyebanji for his consistent support for sports development in Ekiti State, which continues to provide the right environment for our teams to succeed.”

The result strengthens Ekiti Queens FC’s position in the NWFL standings as they continue their campaign despite playing home fixtures away from Ado-Ekiti.
